Senator Akaka sponsored (03/09/2004) S.Res.88  that the Senate passed designating April 2005 as “Financial Literacy Month.” The bill was to raise public awareness about the importance of financial education in the United States and the serious consequences associated with a lack of understanding about personal finances. S.RES.409 A resolution designating April 2012 as "Financial Literacy Month".

July 30, 2016 The National Kidney foundation of Hawaii breaks ground in Kapolei. Their facility will have a space for The Senator Daniel Akaka Community Center. The Senator always advocated for those at risk or kidney disease.
