Hawaii Tropical Forest

Senator Akaka sponsored S.2679 The Hawaii Tropical Forest Recovery Act, which became public law on October 29, 1992.

It outlined action plans for the management of forestry in Hawaii and and with the hope that it would eventually be used for the sustainability of tropical forests globally. The principles for the action plan - stewardship, sustainable development, habitat conservation, and sensitivity to community needs – were planning concepts to carry through the natural forestry life -cycles which for forests are measured in centuries.

Maintaining the forest plan in this law ensured the endurance of our forests in balance with sustainable forestry ventures and the success of communities that surround the forests. akakaforests
